Driver and firmware updates

Shows the driver and firmware updates Windows Update has for your PC, in plain words, and matches them to devices that are not working. You choose what to install.

When to use it

  • A device is not working and needs a driver.
  • You want to see what driver updates Windows has for this PC.

How to use it

  1. Open Brightfix and go to Protect, then Driver and firmware updates.
  2. Brightfix asks Windows Update what it has. This can take a minute.
  3. Read each update: what it is, who made it, and the version it replaces. Nothing is ticked.
  4. Tick what you want. Drivers install one at a time, after a restore point. Restart when it suits you.

What it changes

Installs the driver or firmware updates you tick, from Windows Update only.

What it never does

  • Never gets drivers from any other website.
  • Never installs drivers or firmware on its own, or as part of a one click fix.
  • If your organization manages driver updates, Brightfix offers nothing and says why.

Undo

A driver can be rolled back from History and undo, using Windows' own Roll back driver. Firmware cannot be undone, so it asks a second time, needs the charger plugged in, and on a BitLocker PC asks you to confirm your recovery key is saved.

Advanced details
  • Searches with the Windows Update Agent (IsInstalled=0 and Type='Driver').
  • Undo uses DiRollbackDriver for the device.
  • Firmware updates are only the Firmware device class, one per run.

Every action is logged with the time, the command, the result and the exit code.
