Guides / Fix a problem
PC broke after an update
Checks whether a recent Windows update is behind crashes or failed installs, explains update errors in plain words, and can remove the last update if it is causing trouble.
When to use it
- Crashes or problems started right after Windows updated.
- An update keeps failing with an error code.
How to use it
- Open Brightfix and go to Fix a problem.
- Choose My PC broke after an update.
- Read the timeline: what was installed, and what started going wrong after it.
- If the last update is the likely cause, you can remove it. This asks a second time.
What it changes
Only if you choose: removes the most recent update.
What it never does
- Never turns Windows Update off. The update may come back later, often fixed.
Undo
A removed update can be installed again from Windows Update. A restore point is made first.
Advanced details
- Reads Reliability Monitor, the event logs and the installed package list (DISM).
- Can take a few minutes and may need a restart.
Every action is logged with the time, the command, the result and the exit code.
